In this image, what drew me to it was the composition of the photo and how there are these lines going across the images as well as there being these very rectangular and square shapes throughout. Also another thing I really liked about this image is the way he has seen how these blue and red chairs are opposite to the blue and red curtains behind them. I really like how this wasn't set up and this was juts found but there is this real artistic feel to it as well as the way the colours work and contradict each other.

What is successful about this image is the use of lighting as the different tones of light as well as the composition as they both create this sense of isolation through the use of negative space and the way the figure is trapped in the mesh. The texture of the material coming down from the light has this really chaotic feel to it and as it is round the figures top half it distorts the figure which further creates the sense of confusion and harshness.

In this shoot I spent about 3 hours walking in a rough circle taking images of things that were the colour green. When taking these images I tried not to go for the typical leaves or tree and tried to take abstract images of things that I spotted, such as capturing greens in people, objects and details around the area. Below I have included the most successful image that I have taken but the rest of the photos can be found if you click the button of the album bellow. I also made an online exhibition which the link for is also bellow. In my creation of the exhibition I wanted to create a very calming affect to simulate the feel of calm I felt when taking the images. I also wanted to have the images quite large to be able to see all the details and aspects.

Sally MannWhat drew me to these images is the way the focus is both clearly on the figures even though in one the aperture is very large so the background is fully blurred and the other the aperture seems to be about F5.6 as the fore and background is in focus but due to the positioning of the figures and the white of their dresses really draw our attention to them.
These are interesting because they demonstrate a really beautiful representation of the emotions of the girls which I really like. The environment helps reflect where they are and their childhood and idenity. |
In this photograph there is two figures in the foreground and in the background there is another figure but their face is covered by an image of a set of decaying teeth. The figures are in a room with a sofa and photos on the wall behind the figures. In the photo the things I recognise is how there is an intimidating feel to the image through the positioning of the figures in the foreground as well as them looking into the camera and their mannerisms such as the gun hand signs. The things that seem new to me is the way the image of teeth has been put over the image to cover the mans face as I haven't seen this much before in photographers. This photo reminds me of an album cover for music such as rap. The use of lines in this picture, in terms of the rule of three the two figures in the foreground line up in the two middle lines which allows them to be our focal point but in terms of lines in the image there is a mix with the strong lines of the background and the natural lines of the figures. There is a mix of both organic and geometric which creates this naturalistic and realistic feel to the image. The colours and tones in the image are very warm and dark and this could add to the feel of the image.

In this photograph I can see an eye in the centre of a polaroid picture with the surroundings of the face distorted.I recognise that the polaroid has been adapted in places in order to manipulate the image. The way the eye looks in the image is new to me as it has an unrealistic feel to it. This image reminds me of a painting through its colours, the way the distortion looks as well as the look of the eye. The lines in this picture are very free flowing and natural and this is contrasted by the borders of the white polaroid frame.I really like how the shapes create an almost dream-like feel which is seen through the flowing natural shapes. The colours and tones in this image create an atmosphere within the image which I really like. There is a large amount of texture and pattern in the image through the waves and swirls of distortion. The photographer's use of light is seen through the delicate reflection in the eye but I can also infer that the cream and lighter parts of the distortion is where the light was on the other parts of the person's face. What interests me most about this image is the way the photographer has used a polaroid picture to create this creative and abstract image as I have used polaroid pictures in the past so this is another reason why I was drawn to this. Space is represented in this photograph through the central point being the eye and then having this blur of space around the eye, in addition to the complete plane space of the plastic polaroid border. The part of the photograph that strikes me as most interesting is the eye as I am really drawn to the way the eye has this slight unrealistic feel to it which is really impactful as well as beautiful.

In this photograph I can see a blur of people with one person looking at the camera with a mix of colours surrounding the figures. What I recognise in this photograph has the use of a slow shutter speed as part of the figures face is blurred. What seems new to me is that this photo seems to be taken on film that I haven't used so its new to me how she created these tones and colours. This photograph reminds me of a dream through the use of colours and the way your can't figure out clearly what is going on. The lines in this picture are very natural through the blend of figures which I like as I like very free images without and straight lines. I really like how the shapes create an almost dream-like feel which is seen through the flowing natural shapes. The colours and tones in this image was one of the things that drew me to the image as I love the atmosphere and feel they give to the image. The textures and patterns are very soft in this image but I like how you can see some grain from the film which create a really interesting and nice feel to it. The photographer has captured the play of light in this image through the blend of colours and having a really nice contrast between darker and light.
The thing that I find the most interesting about this image is the photographer's use of framing and colour as I really love the effect it is able to create through these. There is almost a lack of space in this image as it is quiet a closely composed image. This picture is quite similar to reality but the differences is that use of heightened colours and lighting. What I think this photo is about is identity and connection to other people through the composition of the figures together and the use of colour. |
What is it within your photography that you are really interested in?In my photography what I am interested in is my use of colour but particularly within portraits. I am drawn to these elements as I think they work really well together in photographs as well as further helping to create meaning and an atmosphere within the work. I also really like how the use of colour and portraits can covey emotions with in the piece and within the viewer as well as being able to have a personal feel to them. I also like to show the relationship between people (mostly who I know) and how they either relate to me or each other.
|
What is it about your project that you want to know? What I want to know in my project is how I can create photos that are personal and meaningful to me while also being impactful to others. I think the best way to do this is exploring colour in different ways to see the best way and can create emotion, moods and represent myself through images that don't just have to be self portraits. I also like to take my own response to ideas and subjects by taking my own spin to it. I want to also to explore people close to me and my relationship with them and how they are with each other.
|
What is it you want to document? What I want to document is mirror photos rather than window photos as I feel like in many of my photographs even though they may not be of me they suggest and convey something either about me or create an emotion or feeling or about people close to me. I also like to document things close to me or things I see everyday to further add that personal mirror feel to the image. Overall especially relationships and identities of the self or others.
|
How much do you want to document what you see?I want to document what I see not in a literal way such as in just taking an image of a space to document it, I would want to take an image that has some sort of meaning or emotion behind it or the use of successful colour highlights or draws me into taking the image . So even though it may some people may think took an image for no reason I feel that there must be some feeling I had or reason that I took the image.
|
What do you want to share with the viewer? What I want to share with the viewer is my personal view of the world, how I see it, what I notice that others may not. I think this would be interesting to show as through my images people would be able to see my point of view through the camera as well as see an element of me within the photographs. As well as how I see people, myself and others and how I see people togther.
|
What do you want the viewer to experience / feel ?When looking at my image I want people to feel and experiences a connection to the subjects in the image as well as to feel the emotions I was trying to convey in my image. However if they feel something different I think that would also be successful as I find it interesting how other people interpret my images. I also would want to invite the viewer into how I see the world and my bond with people as well as myself.

Have you documented in great detail a photographer or groups of photographers that have also photographed similar theme/story/subject?I have looked at the photos of Petra Collins as I was drawn to the colour in her photographs but also about her personal feel to her images. I really love the idea of showing your true identity in your image through both yourself and others and showing pride for the true you which is what she does in her photos. I also like the way she connects with the subjects and how they feel so comfortable and natural which shows her close relationship and trust with them which is something I want to do in my portraits.
|
What were your findings within their own work?My findings within her work was that she portrays the "female gaze and highlight elements of femininity, coupled with her unique aesthetic, makes her a true bastion of the progression and activism of culture through the art of photography." As well as "in series ranging from controversial self-portraits to emotionally charged and intensely coloured works—she operates on the joys, excitement, tedium, and madness of growing up in today’s interconnected kingdom of images."

After looking at the photographers above I wanted to explore the idea of film cameras. The photographer Petra Collins, who is a key photographer in my investigation, also uses film which also leads me to the idea of exploring this medium. I found these videos that explored the camera and film that she uses but also I found two more that explored the ways she uses her camera in order to create the feel and style of her images. I found these really useful as this is the sort of style I want to create in my images as well as helped me to have an introduction to what kind of film I would want to use and how to connect with my subject to help create a visual comfort and closeness in my portraits. You can watch these videos by clicking on the images to the right.

On the left, you can see images of the camera I have used. I used it to take portraits in black and white film so therefore I can develop the film at school to be involved in the process further. By using this film camera I can be more experimental and not worry about how the images come out and therefore there is more chance for accidental success but also if they don't work it gives me more reason to keep experimenting and growing my skill in film photography. I struggle with perfection in photography and want to always make good or successful images but I am excited to start using film to allow me to break away from this habit and be more experimental and free with my photography.
